Orthodoxy in Australia has been around since the early 1900s, with the first service celebrated by a Russian ship passing through in the 1800s. To date, however, no one has done a complete historical overview of Orthodoxy in this country – though there have been histories written about the Russian Presence in Australia by Fr Michael Protopopov and of St Andrew’s Theological College in Sydney.
One such contribution to this work is about the Orthodox Church in Tasmania. Although written by a subdeacon in the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, and therefore focusing on that jurisdiction, it is a well-written piece and deserves a wider reading by those interested in how the Church is developing on the island.
You can read Sdn David Gould’s piece on his blog, ‘Russian Orthodox Tasmania’.
