Dcn Andrew Smith
Fr Andrew Smith is an Orthodox Christian deacon, and is the author of Introduction to Orthodox Christianity. He serves at Holy Annunciation Orthodox Church, Brisbane.
While a student in high school, Andrew converted to Orthodox Christianity from a non-theistic background after 18 months of, in his words, “searching for God’s religion”. He went on to graduate with Politics, Philosophy and Ethics qualifications and work in the private sector before working in Chaplaincy at a Prep-to-Year-12 school, where he was guided by the knowledge that the only solution to the God-shaped gap in every human heart is, in fact, God Himself. He went on to study education, human resource management and applied Orthodox theology.
Andrew was also the co-founder of Anesti, which in 2009 went to Easterfest with a stall about Orthodoxy. He has taught religious education for seven years, guided church tours, supported catechumens, sung in parish choirs and now serves as a deacon, all the while being grateful that God led him home to the Orthodox Church.
